Converted to A1X class in December 1913, No. 662 Martello entered Southern Railway stock on 1 January, 1923 having accumulated 901,273 miles in service. Based at Fratton, and now numbered as 2662 under the Southern Railway, the fraility of the Langstone Bridge to Hayling Island meant that Terriers became synonymous with use on the line, and 2662 spent its entire Southern Railway life working as a regular on the branchline.
