LMS, Princess Coronation Class, 4-6-2, 6220 ‘Coronation’ – Era 3 (R3857)
The lead locomotive of the class, 6220 Coronation entered the LMS stock book on 1 June 1937, having been displayed to the press at Crewe Works on 26 May. Regular Coronation Scot services commenced on 5 July, but prior to that 6220 Coronation was filmed for a publicity feature with the train between Colwyn Bay and Llandudno Junction. From 20 December 1938, 6220 ran as 6229 Duchess of Hamilton, as 6229 was masquerading as 6220 Coronation during a visit to the USA and even after returning in 1942, it was not until 14 May 1943 that 6220 Coronation was restored to its correct identity.
