LMS, Class 4P Compound, 4-4-0, 1072 – Era 3 (R3276)

The 195 LMS built 4P Compound 4-4-0 locomotives were heavily based upon the 45 Midland Railway 1000 Class built between 1902 and 1909. Construction of the class was split between Derby Works, Horwich Works, the North British locomotive Company and the Vulcan Foundry with locomotives numbers initially continuing on from the Midland locomotives, beginning with No. 1045. The class’ 4P classification made them ideal for hauling fast passenger trains as well as express goods workings. Although none of the LMS class were preserved, the first of the similar Midland 1000 Class, No. 1000 has survived.Entering service in September 1924, Compound 1072 remained in service for more than 31 years with the LMS and British Railways before being withdrawn at the end of October 1955.
